Not since humans invented shoes or underwear has a single item of clothing become so common in such a short amount of time. From Melbourne to Mexico City , Bejjing to Bordeaux , many people can be seen wearing this piece of clothing: the face mask.
But rarely , maybe never, has anything else worm by humans created such widespread debate. Jeremy Howard is the co - founder of Masks4All,a group supporting face mask use for everyone.
Speaking recently about masks , Howard said there has probably never been such a quick and“ dramatic” change in worldwide human behavior.
Yet not everyone is accepting of this safety measure , which health officials say is aimed at reducing the spread of the coronavirus. Plenty of people do not like being told what to do. Many also do not trust scientific evidence suggesting that masks can be an effective way to reduce new infections.
A person in London argued against mask - wearing requirements in stores , saying: “People die every year. This is nothing new.”
Mohammed al - Burji, a 42 - year - old government worker in Lebanon , shared his thoughts on wearing masks.“There is no coronavirus , brother. They’re just cheating people.
Shopping with her young children, French museum worker Celine Brunet - Moret said she isn’t being able to see emotions on people’s faces. She thinks it's not the same life or the normal life and they'll never get used to it.
But across the street from the shop where Brunet - Moret was buying cheese,Laure Estiez said that going out without one of her home - made masks now feels" almost unnatural.”She says every morning she goes through a process of picking colors to match her mood and clothing. She says this daily activity has become “a pleasure.
“We have a very strong ability of adaptation," she said.“You get used to everything.”

Opportunity arose for a successful experiment in a remote village called Simarkundi surrounded by 1800 acres of jungle which wasn't even accessible by bicycle- -one had to walk 7 km through a dense jungle to reach it. Villagers here were either employed as manual labour in stone mining operations ,or in the illegal felling of trees.
Siddharth hadn't visited the village yet. In one meeting , he asked the local range officer who often interacted with Simarkundi 's residents about what they needed.
What residents needed desperately was a drinking water well. To access water , they had to get it by digging the dry river bed nearby which was then collected in earthen pots. Working with local officials, they began the construction of a 30 - feet drinking water well. Wanting to see if there was any progress on constructing this well , Siddharth visited the village for the first time in January 2006 undertaking a two -hour trek.
The well made him fall in love with the village, and he felt he could succeed unlike his earlier experiments. After the well was constructed, He would walk 14 km to the village back and forth every Sunday. Altogether , he made around 40 such visits on foot and after a few months villagers did some repair work in the forest , which allowed him to visit on a motorcycle. Today , you can visit the village in your car.
There was significant improvement in farm practices and residents raised their income greatly. They stopped cutting trees from the forests. Many backward practices were successfully addressed. They constructed a kuccha road to the village and there isn't even an inch which isn’t irrigated. All this change happened within two years.
Siddharth was transferred out of Koderma to Ranchi in 2008 , but even then he would visit the village every Sunday for the next five years to ensure these changes were permanent.

The World Wildlife Fund for Nature - WWF - reports that nearly 3 billion animals were killed or displaced by Australia ’s wildfires in 2019 and 2020. The number , reported in late July , was about three times higher than an earlier WWF estimate. “It ranks as one of the worst wildlife disasters in modern history,” said WWF - Australia Chief Executive officer Dermot O' Gorman.
The WWF said it used different methods to estimate wildlife populations, including information from over 100 ,000 studies. The scientists created models to estimate the number of creatures found in areas destroyed by fire. Project leader Lily Van Eeden from the University of Sydney said the research was the first continent - wide examination of animals affected by wildfires. “Other nations can build upon this research to improve understanding of bushfire impacts everywhere ,' she said.
Those creatures that fled destroyed habitats faced a lack of food and shelter or the likelihood of
moving into already occupied habitats. Researchers said the destruction will cause some species to become extinct before their existence is even recorded. “We don' t even know what we are losing, ”said Chris Dickman ,a professor of ecology at the University of Sydney.“These were species that were here and now they have gone... It's almost too tragic to think about ,”Dickman added.
The WWF report calls for improvements in habitat connectivity to help species escape from fires. It also calls for identifying and protecting habitat that was not burned to help save threatened species. An expanded report on the study is expected later this year.
The wildfires started in September 2019 and continued through March of this year. Scientists say the fires were fueled by higher than normal temperatures and years of drought in the Australian bush. The fires caused 34 human deaths and destroyed nearly 3 ,000 homes. The WWF said that over the past year,it had raised money from donors to allocate emergency aid to the front lines of the fires to help injured and displaced wildlife.
32. What do we know about Australia' s wildfires in 2019 and 2020?
A. They were the worst disasters in history.
B. Over 3 billion animals died in the wildfires.
C. They caused more damage than calculated earlier.
D. Most animals moved to already occupied habitats.
33. How did Chris Dickman feel about the extinction of some species?
A. Astonished. B. Pained. . C. Annoyed. D. Puzzled.
34. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. The wildfires last a whole year.
B. The wildfires were caused by the heat.
C. The wildfires also cause damages to humans.
D. The wildfires were soon under control with donations.
35. What lesson can we learn from the text?
A. Humans shouldn't occupy wildlife habitat.

39
If you are worried about what to do in the moment when someone makes a joke, the solution can be simple: Kindly ask the person the reason for the laughter , like this , says Melendez:
“‘Is there a different way that I could have said it? or ‘How would you usually say it?'
